Mobility Aids Grant in Cork
The Mobility Aids Grant pays up to €8,000 for work such as an accessible shower, grab rails or a ramp. It can cover the full cost. Household income must be under €37,500.
What is the Mobility Aids Grant?
It is the fast-track council grant for smaller works that fix a mobility problem at home. It is mainly used by older people, though people with a disability can apply too. The maximum rose from €6,000 to €8,000 on 1 December 2024, and the income limit rose from €30,000 to €37,500.
What does it cover?
- Accessible showers, including a bath to shower conversion
- Grab rails
- Access ramps
- Stairlifts and fixed track hoists
- Other minor work the council agrees is needed for mobility
Who qualifies?
- Gross household income under €37,500 a year
- You own your home, or rent privately with the landlord's permission
- Your Local Property Tax is in order
Council tenants do not qualify under this scheme. Ask your council's housing department about adapting a council home.
Do you need an occupational therapist report?
An occupational therapist report is required for a stairlift or a fixed track hoist. The council can arrange it, or you can hire a private occupational therapist and claim up to €300 of the fee as part of the grant. For a shower, ask the council whether it wants one.
How do you apply?
- Get the housing adaptation grants form from Cork City Council or Cork County Council.
- Attach proof of household income, your Local Property Tax details and an itemised quote.
- Wait for written approval.
- Start the work within six months of approval. The grant is paid once it is finished.

Does the Mobility Aids Grant cover a walk-in shower?
Yes. Accessible showers are one of the works named in the scheme. Whether the full cost is covered depends on the quote and the €8,000 limit.
What if the shower costs more than €8,000?
You pay the difference, or you apply for the Housing Adaptation Grant instead, which has a €40,000 limit.
What counts as household income?
The gross income of the household for the previous tax year, less the deductions listed on the form.
How soon must the work start?
Within six months of the council approving the grant.
