Housing Aid for Older People Grant

This grant pays up to €10,700 for essential repairs so that people aged 66 and over can stay in their own homes. It is mainly for repairs. For a shower, one of the other two grants usually fits better.

Maximum grant€10,700Or 100% of the approved cost. For people aged 66 and over.

What is the Housing Aid for Older People Grant?

It is a council grant that improves the condition of an older person's home. It pays for essential repairs: fixing a roof, rewiring, replacing windows and doors, or putting in heating where there is none. The maximum rose from €8,000 to €10,700 on 1 December 2024.

Who qualifies?

  • Aged 66 or over. Councils can help younger people in cases of real hardship.
  • Living in a home that needs essential repairs
  • Gross household income under €75,000. Under €37,500 gets the full rate, reducing to 30% in the top band.

Does it pay for a walk-in shower?

Usually it is not the right grant. If the shower is needed because of a mobility problem, the council will normally look at:

The same application form covers all three, so you tick the grant that matches and the council can redirect you. If your home needs both repairs and an accessible bathroom, ask the grants section how to apply for both.

What paperwork is needed?

The form, proof of income and Local Property Tax details, a quote, and for some repairs a contractor's report, for example on the condition of the roof or the wiring.
