Typical cost€4,500–€8,000Bath out, walk-in shower in, walls finished. Confirmed in a written quote after we see the room.

What is a bath to shower conversion?

It is the most common job we do. The bath is removed and a walk-in shower is built in the space it leaves, usually about 1,700mm long, which is plenty of room for a tray, a seat and a glass screen. The rest of the bathroom stays as it is, so there is far less disruption than a full refit.

What do you get?

  • A low-profile or level non-slip shower tray in place of the bath
  • A fixed glass screen or half-height doors, whichever suits the person using it
  • A fold-down shower seat and grab rails at the right height
  • A thermostatic shower, which holds a steady temperature and prevents scalding
  • Wall panels or tiles covering the area where the bath stood

How does the job run?

  1. Home visit. We measure the room and ask what the person finds hard: stepping in, standing, reaching the controls.
  2. Written quote. Itemised, so it can go straight into a grant application if you are making one.
  3. Grant approval, if you are applying. The council must approve before work starts.
  4. Fitting. Bath out, plumbing altered, tray and walls in, seat and rails fitted and tested.

Tray or level floor?

A low tray, about 40mm high, suits most people who can still lift a foot. If the person uses a wheelchair or a wheeled shower chair, ask about a level-access floor or a full wet room instead. In upstairs bathrooms with timber floors a level floor is usually possible; on a concrete ground floor it can mean cutting into the slab, which adds cost.

Can a grant pay for it?

Often, yes. An accessible shower is one of the works named under the Mobility Aids Grant, which pays up to €8,000 where household income is under €37,500. See the Mobility Aids Grant in Cork or compare all three in our grants guide.

Your questions answered

How long does a bath to shower conversion take?

It depends on the wall finish and any plumbing changes. We confirm the timing in your written quote, before you commit to anything.

Will there be a gap where the bath was?

No. The tray is sized to fill the space the bath leaves, and the walls are finished in panels or tiles down to the tray.

Can you fit a walk-in shower in a small bathroom?

Yes. A standard bath space is long enough for a walk-in shower with a seat. In very small rooms a wet room floor often gives more usable space than a tray and screen.

Do I need planning permission?

No. Changing a bath for a shower inside your home does not need planning permission.
